Call for Participation – Summer School "Governance Technologies: Privacy, Fairness & Transparency“

Call for Participation – Summer School "Governance Technologies: Privacy, Fairness & Transparency“

From 16 to 19 September 2019, the interdisciplinary summer school "Governance Technologies: Privacy, Fairness & Transparency" will take place in Hamburg. It is aimed at young PhD students as well as post-docs interested in the interface between computer science, law and philosophy. Young researchers have the opportunity to network and exchange with outstanding colleagues, to gain new knowledge and to receive feedback on their own current research.

Topic

Highly networked services are at the heart of digital innovation. However, critical cases of misuse of such technologies (e.g. Cambridge Analytica) raise the question of the control of such phenomena. The interaction of users with hyper-networked digital services poses particular challenges in terms of data protection, transparency and fairness. The summer school will focus on the different forms of governance to protect these values in these socio-technical systems.

The keynote speakers of the summer school are among others:
  • Professor Mireille Hildebrandt, Vrije Universiteit Brussels (Belgium) & Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands)
  • Professor Bart Jacobs, Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands)
  • Professor Niva Elkin-Koren, Haifa University (Israel) & associate faculty at the Berkman Klein Center, Harvard University (USA)
  • Professor Nikolas Guggenberger, Universität Münster (Germany) & Information Society Project (Yale University, USA)

The summer school is organised by the cross-institutional, interdisciplinary research group "Internet Governance Technology" (University of Hamburg, TU Hamburg and Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut). It will take place on the premises of the Leibniz Institute for Media Research │ Hans-Bredow-Institut and the adjoining guesthouse of the University of Hamburg (Rothenbaumchaussee 34/36, D-20148 Hamburg).

Application

Interested applicants can apply until 16 June 2019 and send their CV and an abstract of their current research (max. 1 page / approx. 500 words) to Mattis Jacobs.

Participation is free of charge. Travel expenses, accommodation and meals must be paid by the participants themselves. Information on accommodation will be made available to participants in good time in advance.

Further information about the summer school can be found here.
