BredowCast 39: The Relotius Case

BredowCast 39: The Relotius Case

The fabrication scandal surrounding Claas Relotius shook the media world at the end of 2018. A few weeks have passed since then, and Prof. Dr. Wiebke Loosen, a journalism researcher, looks at the events and background information with some distance in the current BredowCast.

In December 2018, shortly before Christmas, SPIEGEL announced that it had been involved in a serious case of fraud. Claas Relotius, a star reporter of the house and winner of numerous journalist awards, had admitted to having falsified stories on a grand scale.

Wiebke Loosen confesses that today she is quite happy that she was already on her Christmas holiday break at that time and therefore could not be available for first statements and analyses. For her as a researcher, a certain scientific distance from this highly complex case is an advantage. A good month after the revelations, she makes time for the BredowCast and talks about the significance, but also about the pitfalls of journalistic reportage and explains why the Relotius case will find its way into all handbooks for journalists.

The case showed her once again why it is so important what she does every day as a journalism researcher: observe and analyse how journalism works.
