Media shape our ideas of health and illness and – besides medical experts – are central sources of information. What role media play in individual health behavior and how health communication may be optimized by communication scientific knowledge are central questions to answer in our competence center "Health Communication".
Media are in many ways relevant in shaping health-related ideas and informing people about health- and illness-related issues. With the development of digital media, new opportunities for health communication emerged.
Since 2000, the institute in various research contexts deals with portrayals of health issues in different media, health-related media use as well as strategic forms of health communication and their evaluation. In this, making results of communication scientific research usable for other disciplines as well as for health-related practice is of particular concern, e.g. to support and optimize target group specific development of health-related communication and information services.
Besides the examination of visual aspects of health communication, challenges and potentials of digital media in health contexts currently are in the focus of this competence center.
