Third Better Internet for Kids Policy Map

Third Better Internet for Kids Policy Map

On 30 November 2020, the third edition of the study "Better Internet for Kids" Policy Map was presented at the Safer Internet Forum. The HBI and the TU Dublin were involved in this study. It was commissioned by the EU Commission.

The study provides an overview of policy design and implementation of the topics and recommendations of the "European Strategy for a Better Internet for Children" (BIK Strategy) in 30 countries.

You can download the study here (pdf)

The BIK strategy, first defined by the European Commission in May 2012, sets out objectives in five areas:

  • high-quality online content for children and young people;
  • digital and media literacy in education;
  • raising awareness and empowerment;
  • rules and tools for a safer online environment for children;
  • combating the sexual abuse and exploitation of children.
The analysis of the BIK Policy Map III study covers all EU Member States, Iceland, Norway and the United Kingdom. A first report on how the Strategy is being taken into account at national level was published in 2015 and a second in March 2018.

The third iteration now published examines the implementation of the BIK Strategy for the first time based on extended and refined criteria. In addition, it makes statements on the implementation of the individual strategy areas at national level over time and thus shows implementation differences and trends.
