The academic study "Journalism under Pressure: Risks and Uncertainties in a Changing Media World" aims to find out how much journalistic work has changed due to digital transformation and which professional challenges journalists currently find particularly pressing. It has started on 1 September 2022.
It is the most comprehensive survey of journalists worldwide to date. As part of the UNESCO-supported research network "Worlds of Journalism", it is being conducted in about 100 countries around the globe and offers a unique insight into the journalistic profession.
In Germany, the representative survey of journalists will start in September, organised by the Leibniz Institute for Media Research│Hans-Bredow-Institut. The survey will take place by telephone or online and will be conducted by the opinion research institute Ipsos. Participants do not have to register themselves, but are determined in random samples and contacted by telephone by Ipsos.
Findings Eagerly Awaited
"We know that time is limited for journalists," says study director Prof. Dr. Wiebke Loosen of the Leibniz Institute for Media Research. "Nevertheless, we hope for a high level of participation and ask all respondents to take about 30 to 40 minutes - in the public interest and also in their own interest for reliable data on the state of journalism." Of course, all provisions of the EU's Basic Data Protection Regulation will be complied with.
The results are likely to be eagerly awaited in the media, academia, politics and society. The last representative data collected on the journalistic profession in Germany came from the Worlds of Journalism study of 2014/2015.
