A regular policy table is to facilitate future exchanges between representatives of small and medium-sized social media platforms and the scientific community.
Researchers of the HBI make scientific findings available in dialog with practitioners. At the same time, the practical experience of the platforms helps to identify new research needs related to current phenomena. The topics are based on current developments. In particular, the Digital Services Act (DSA) raises many new issues that affect smaller social media platforms beyond big tech companies.
The Policy Table was initiated by
Christina Dinar and takes place within the HBI's Research Program 2 "Regulatory Structures and the Emergence of Rules in Online Spaces". It is an open exchange format. Four to six representatives of German-speaking platforms regularly take part. New participants are welcome to join, present topics and network with each other. The next meeting will take place on 24 October 2023, and subsequent meetings will be arranged with the participants during the policy table or afterwards by e-mail. The project is scheduled to run through the end of 2024. Christina Dinar and the FP2 spokesperson Prof.

Current topics include:
- Community-based content moderation and rule-building with the community (especially collaboration with volunteers),
- Different approaches to community management,
- The Platforms Tax Transparency Act,
- Tools for dealing with hate speech and SPAM,
- Data protection components,
- Digital Services Act regulations,
- Copyright licenses,
- The role of the Digital Services Coordinator planned by the legislator,
- Exchange of experience on the NEA.
