Hamburg, 27 November 2019. A new anthology clears up misconceptions about the Internet and summarises what we really know about the online world. The editors Matthias C. Kettemann and Stephan Dreyer presented the book on 27 November 2019 at the Internet Governance Forum 2019 in Berlin.
How often do we read in newspapers that we all live in echo chambers, that criminals cannot be prosecuted online or that states cannot enforce their rights on the Internet? Is that really true?
PD Dr. Matthias C. Kettemann and
Dr. Stephan Dreyer, two Internet researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut, have been active as "mythbusters". "We have noticed that we are constantly confronted with misconceptions about the Internet. In discussions with politicians, journalists or in dialogue with citizens," say the editors. "We wanted to change that!"
With the financial support of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy, the research programme spokespersons began to search for the 50 most powerful myths and for 50 experts from America, Africa, Asia and Europe, who then narrowly refuted these myths.
"We are particularly pleased that our book is being published in English and German and that the myths and their resolution have been translated into all UN languages," said the editors. The abstracts are also available in Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish and French.

Conceptualized as an important contribution to the constructive discourse on the challenges of the future of the Internet, the book contains 50 fact-based, vivid and practically explained "Internet truths" - as a strong counterpart to the myths.
The volume will be presented on 27 November 2019 as part of the
Internet Governance Forums 2019 (IGF 2019), the world's largest UN Internet conference. At the conference, the book will also be distributed as a giveaway to all visitors.
