At least since Corona we know the platforms Zoom and Telegram a little better. Here the irreplaceable component in the home office, there the supposed playground of the Corona deniers, where prominent voices such as Attila Hildmann and Xavier Naidoo reach hundreds of thousands of people.
Telegram is not only popular among people with so-called "alternative opinions", but also among those who want to spread illegal content. According to a study by the Media Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia, there are violations of the law in the areas of right-wing extremism, pornography, drug and document trafficking on Telegram. The call for regulation of these digital spaces is becoming ever louder.
Zoom also raises the question of regulation. Due to its growing importance as a communication space, there is a growing desire to specify what can and cannot be said on the platform. In part, this is already happening. A lecture event with the speaker Leila Khaled, who belongs to the Palestinian organization "People's Front for the Liberation of Palestine" (PFLP), was cancelled by Zoom in September 2020 after complaints from civil society organizations and protest actions in front of Zoom's headquarters had been received. The PFLP is classified by the USA as terrorist.
