Supporting good online offerings for children is a common concern of the Media Authorities from Hesse and Thuringia along with the Erfurter Netcode for many years. The triumph of mobile devices and apps offers many new opportunities but also brings new challenges, problems and risks. In many families, even the youngest child uses mobile devices. Older children often have their own smartphone, which enables them to be online all the time. In schools, there are debates about an equipment with mobile devices, tablets in classrooms and the use of own devices during classes.

The provider of browser-based websites for children sooner or later face the question whether they should transfer their contents into an app or offer additional apps. Games dominate the environment in this case more than browser-based websites. The new world of apps seems to be infinite at first. Without special search engines and links, the question arises whether and how good offerings find an audience.

For young people, social networks are the key element of their online usage. Stand-alone offerings have only a small chance to be noticed. Does this also apply to offerings for children?

In-app purchases offer new business models for providers besides the traditional forms of online advertising. By using cameras and microphones, location and transaction data and the links with social networks and profiles offer mobiles devices new opportunities for the conception, analyses and design of contents. At the same time, it leads to new problems, questions and demands concerning data protection and data security – especially when it comes to offerings for children.

We would like to invite you to the 7. Thüringisch-Hessischen Mediengespräch [7th Thuringian-Hessian Media Conference] to discuss these important questions together.
