Jahreskonferenz der ICA 2018 in Prag

The Annual Conference of the International Communications Association (ICA) takes place in Prague from 24 to 28 May 2018. The Hans-Bredow-Institut will be represented by numerous contributions. In a total of five panels and four lectures, researchers of the institute wil present their current research.

An Overview of the Contributions by the Hans-Bredow-Institut

Preconference: 23 May 2018

09:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. - Prior to the official opening of the conference, Prof. Dr. Wiebke Loosen and Julius Reimer will give a lecture on “Extending the Methods of Media and Communication Studies by Design Research: Co-Creation as an Approach for Journalism Research” at the pre-conference of the ICA. The pre-conference “Design as Object, Design as Method: Making Critical Communication Futures“ will focus on the topic of design in communication.

09:45 a.m. – 5:15 p.m. - Parallel to this, the preconference on "Trust, Control and Privacy: Mediatisation of Childhood and Adolescence in the Digital Age" takes place, at which the Hans-Bredow-Institut will be represented with three presentations:
  • Lecture by Dr. Uwe Hasebrink, Dipl.-Jur.Stephan Dreyer et. al.: "Balancing Trust and Control: How Adolescents between 9 and 16 and Their Parents Negotiate Issues of Online Safety"
  • Lecture by Dipl.-Jur. Stephan Dreyer: “Trust as a Prerequisite or Trust as an Outcome? The Relationship between Trust, Transparency and Consent in Child-Specific Privacy Legislation”
  • Dr. Claudia Lampert: "How can Good (Health) Apps for Kids Be Found? Challenges in Terms of Trust, Transparency and Media Literacy"

09:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Dr. Claudia Lampert will give a lecture at the panel “The Internet of Toys: Practices, Affordances and the Political Economy of Children’s Play” on the topic “Smart Toys in Public Discourse: A Case Study of Germany and Austria.”

2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. - At the paper session “Revisiting the Concept of Media, Public, Effects”, Prof. Dr. Uwe Hasebrink will give a lecture on “Repertoires of Public Connection: A Conceptual Approach to Investigating the Re-Figuration of Publics.”

Day 3 - 26 May 2018

08:00 a.m. – 09:15 a.m. - Prof. Dr. Wiebke Loosen will give the lecture “‘Makers’ of a Future Journalism? The Role of ‘Pioneer Journalists’ and ‘Pioneer Communities’ in Transforming Journalism” at the paper session “The Production of Knowledge About Journalism: Academic, Professional and Educational Perspectives.”

8:00 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. - Dr. Cornelius Puschmann will give a response to the panel “Personalization, Politics and Policy: Cross-National Perspectives”.

9:30 a.m. – ​10:45 a.m. Michael Grimm will chair the paper session "Pepe the Frog and Picturing Together-ness: Collective Identities Online".

2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. - Dr. Cornelius Puschmann will chair the panel "Measuring Diversity in Algorithmically Personalized News Environments". The following lectures will be given by researchers from the Hans-Bredow-Institut:
  • Juhi Kulshrestha and Dr. Cornelius Puschmann: "Biased or Diverse? Measuring Personalization in Online Search Results"
  • Dr. Sascha Hölig and Lisa Merten will present their research on “’But I Compensate With Print!’ User Preferences and Concerns Regarding Algorithmic News Filtering” at the panel “Measuring Diversity in Algorithmically Personalized News Environments.”

09:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. - This year, Julius Reimer will chair the panel of  the German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (DGPuK).
