Belastende Online Erfahrungen Jugendlicher

In the evening salon "Zwischenraum" [Interspace] of the bar HADLEY'S in Hamburg, Kira Thiel talks about her research in the field of online use by children and young people. Nowadays, young people grow up with social media as a matter of course. Besides enjoyable and enriching digital encounters that create closeness and connection, they also experience stress, pressure and dissatisfaction. How do young people deal with these experiences? What strategies do they develop to let themselves be touched by positive exchanges and at the same time protect themselves from negative experiences?

Kira Thiel is a junior researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut (HBI) and researches the diverse experiences of children and young people in the digital world. Her dissertation project Coping with Stressful Online Experiences in Adolescence connects to this topic and focuses on the question of how adolescents deal with stressful online experiences and which coping strategies they use in this context. In addition to negative experiences of internet use and how they are coped with, she is also interested in the role of digital media, especially social media platforms, in the opinion-forming process of young people and in related phenomena such as social media influencers and fake news.
