Zum Vortrag

While the internet is not exactly limited by state boundaries, it stays divided into language zones. Online spaces based on German, Polish or Mandarin remain otherwise separate, that is, until a speaker of either language translates a piece of information, bringing it from one linguistic space to another. Such sharing of news takes place very frequently and is traditionally mediated, for example, by foreign media correspondents. In the digital age, the role of such intermediaries has also been taken over by regular internet users, who frequent more than one language-bound online space. In this talk, Magdalena Góralska presents the results of her work aimed at understanding the dynamics of information sharing across languages by the members of the Polish diaspora in the US and Germany. She is using the example of Lyme disease (borreliosis) to present a mix-method approach to studying such cross-lingual information exchange.

Zur Person

Magdalena H. Góralska ist Doktorandin an der Universität Warschau und erforscht, wie digitale Kommunikation medizinische Kontroversen beeinflusst und „digital erzeugtes Misstrauen“ schafft.
