Alina Laura Tiews, M. A.
Alina Laura Tiews majored in Modern German History, Modern German Literature, and Comparative Literature at Humboldt University, Berlin. Her master’s thesis focused on measures and consequences of the resettlers’ policy in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the early German Democratic Republic between 1948 and 1952. Spotlighting refugees and expellees in movie and television productions of the two German states from post-WWII to 1990, her current PhD project deals with the issues surrounding German refugees and expellees after WWII from a media-historical point of view. How many films and which ones dealt with flight and expulsion of the Germans after WWII? How did these movies interpret historical events and which political circumstances triggered their production? These are some of the key questions of her research, which is being funded by the Immanuel Kant Scholarship of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, and the DEFA Foundation.
Since March 2013 Alina Laura Tiews is a junior researcher at the Research Centre for the History of Broadcasting in Northern Germany (Forschungsstelle Geschichte des Rundfunks in Norddeutschland). She also works as a volunteer at the media historical journal Rundfunk und Geschichte. From 2005 to 2009, she was employed in the educational department of Berlin’s German Historical Museum (DHM). She has free-lanced as an educator at several museums in Hamburg. Extending beyond the history of migration and the media, Alina Laura Tiews’ research therefore also embraces the fields of cultural memory, politics of memory, and public history.
